An alternative needs to be perceived if families dependent on grass cutting are to earn more capital and free up time to build houses that will withstand future disasters. Local builders are working with the charity Tearfund to train people to construct earthquake-resistant homes using traditional materials. Muthtiar Bibi is aware that her land and maize crop are assets she could begin to earn from, and could enable her family to start rebuilding their life.
